While many changes are occurring, Liguori Publications’ mission—“Catholic, Pastoral, Trusted”—remains the company’s primary goal, reflecting the vision of its spiritual founder, Saint Alphonsus Liguori (1696–1787), a bishop and doctor of the Catholic Church who founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists) in 1732.

In 2024, Liguori Publications will be on the threshold of a new chapter in its seventy-six-year history. As Liguori proceeds to its next phase of evolution, Fr. Tom is again eager to help the company reassert itself in creative ways as an international, multifaceted publisher of exceptional Catholic pastoral resources, and add dimension to our Redemptorist mission through publishing and electronic media.

Living off of the land is true to the spirit of the monastic life of work and prayer. “We don’t beg for our living; we work,” Brother Victor says in a video made in 2015 about The Monk Who Makes New York’s Best Vinegar. Beloved author Brother Victor passed in February 2023.

In commemoration of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of Liguori Publications, current and former employees, their spouses, and Redemptorist Fathers and Brothers assembled in the Fireplace Room at Villa Antonio Winery in Hillsboro, Missouri, on October 21, 2022.

During the new century’s second decade, Liguori Publications broadened its spectrum of respected, authoritative Catholic voices by acquiring Catholic Update, a well-known newsletter from Franciscan Media. Since 1973, this easy-to-read full-color four-pager has helped millions of Catholics grow their faith in classrooms, religious-education programs, and adult faith-formation settings. Written by leading theologians, spiritual authors, and biblical experts, more than 350 editions of Catholic Update on timely topics are available in print and electronically.

Reflecting on his time as president and publisher of Liguori Publications (1999–2006), Fr. Harry Grile, CSsR, wrote “Pastoral Publishing: How Liguorian’s Advice Changed with the Times” (Liguorian, March 2013). He remarked that the twenty-first century came in peacefully, but the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 “changed everything.” Nevertheless, Liguorian continued its mission to address readers’ anxious questions, including those about a “new normal,” as people in the US felt less safe and secure because of 9/11.
