Liguori Author Fr. Daniel Horan Helps Catholics Recall God's Light during Lent with Daybreaks and Un Nuevo Comienzo

As we enter into the forty days of Lent, Catholics seek guidance to lead us into the Easter season. Liguori author Daniel P. Horan, OFM offers us this guidance in Daybreaks: Daily Reflections for Lent and Easter in English and Spanish.

In his take on Liguori’s popular Lent reflection series, Fr. Horan writes about finding the light of joy during the darkest moments before the Resurrection on Easter.

“Even as we call to mind the death of Jesus, we know in our hearts and minds that Christ has risen from the dead­—the joy that stands at the heart of our faith. If we can recall this truth in the darkest moments of Lent, then it may be good practice to continuously recall it in the darkest moments of our personal lives,” said Fr. Horan.

For each day of Lent through the Octave of Easter, Fr. Horan offers a daily Scripture quote and reflection on it, as he did for Advent Daybreaks.

“My favorite part of writing Daybreaks was the opportunity to reflect on the liturgical season of Lent in a deliberate and intentional way,” said Horan. Because of the demands on his schedule, Fr. Horan admits he does not always take the time to fully appreciate each liturgical season as it comes. “Daybreaks helped me to focus my attention on the season and it is my hope that it might be a resource for readers to do the same,” said Horan.

Fr. Horan is a renowned speaker, talking to parishes and dioceses in the US, the UK and New Zealand. Some of his most recent speeches have covered topics ranging from the legacy of the Trappist Monk and Thomas Merton to Franciscan Spirituality.

He will promote Daybreaks at the annual retreat for deacons and their wives at the Diocese of Charleston February 9-11.

“Every time I give a lecture or lead a retreat it's a unique experience, which allows me to share new ideas and reflect on our Catholic faith and tradition with folks I wouldn't have the opportunity to meet otherwise,” said Horan. 

Next month, he will speak over a Eucharistic liturgy at the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress.  The liturgy, Hope for the World in the Young Adult Perspective, is at 5:15 PM in the Marriott Marquis Ballroom.

Along with his busy speaking schedule, Fr. Horan is currently working on a new book: Catholicity and Emerging Personhood: A Contemporary Anthology. 

“The book explores what it means to talk about being creatures of God and all that entails precisely human creatures,” said Horan.
