Libros Liguori Book Wins 1st Place at 2018 ACP Excellence in Publishing Awards
Liguori’s Manual de los sacramentos para los católicos de hoy by Fr. Claudio Burgaleta, SJ, wins first place in Spanish books at the 2018 ACP Excellence in Publishing Awards. Guide for Altar Servers by Michael J. Ruszala was a finalist in Resources for Liturgy.
“I was surprised to hear from Liguori that my book was awarded first place. It was totally out of the blue and a very pleasant surprise for me. It was a reminder and confirmation that these books have found a niche and people have found them helpful. That’s a wonderful thing,” said Fr. Burgaleta.
In Manual de los sacramentos para los católicos de hoy, Fr. Burgaleta gives readers a solid understanding of the sacraments.
“This book helped to explain the ceremony, the ritual of the sacraments, the symbol of the sacraments, and in this way help people enter more deeply into the ordinary way in which most Catholics encounter Jesus Christ in the community that is Church,” said Fr. Burgaleta.
Manual de los sacramentos para los católicos de hoy is the newest in a series of five books by Fr. Burgaleta. Other books include Manual de la teología para los católicos de hoy (2009), Manual de cristología para los católicos de hoy (2010), Manual de eclesiología para los católicos de hoy (2012) and La Fe De Los Hispanos (2013).
“The first time one of these books received the Excellence in Publishing award was back in 2013 with my book Manual de eclesiología para los católicos de hoy,” said Fr. Burgaleta.
Fr. Burgaleta believes the Manual para los católicos de hoy series speak to an audience that often gets overlooked in the United States.
“Although there were books available from Latin America and Spain, they tended to be both expensive and hard to read for the Latino community in the United States to understand,” said Fr. Burgaleta.
“In 2009, Liguori decided to publish these books that would provide its own faith formation for the Latino community in the United States.”
Fr. Burgaleta’s series is part of Libros Liguori, a Spanish product line that appeals mostly to Spanish-speaking Catholics in the United States and Latin America.
Since the early 1980s, Liguori has published many products in Spanish including bulletins, pamphlets, and booklets such as Manual para el católico de hoy and Manual para la familia católica de hoy. Then, in the late 1990s, Liguori adopted the official imprint for the Spanish product line, Libros Liguori.
This year, the ACP selected four to nine books as finalists for ten categories from among hundreds of entries. In the Spanish category, Manual de los sacramentos para los católicos de hoy competed against other titles from Ave Maria Press, Twenty-Third Publications and World Library Publications.
Guide for Altar Servers is a finalist in the Resources for Liturgy category, competing with books from World Library Publications and Liturgical Press.
Guide for Altar Servers is an engaging booklet and an essential tool for any youth preparing to serve at Mass or training for the role of acolyte. The four-color comic book style illustrations are by renowned illustrator Jeff Albrecht.
Previous Excellence in Publishing Award winners from Liguori include: Prophets II, Faith Meets World and Meditations on Vatican Art, which also won Book of the Year in 2014.
The award ceremony was held at the Sheen Center in New York City on Tuesday, June 26, 2018. Accepting on behalf of Liguori was Mary Wuertz von Holt, Director of Sales, Marketing and Product Development.
