Four Liguori Books Named Finalists for Catholic Publishers' 2016 Excellence Awards

Four Liguori books have been named finalists in the Association of Catholic Publishers’ 2016 Excellence in Publishing Awards. The Association of Catholic Publishers (ACP) sponsors the annual awards that “recognize the best in Catholic publishing,” said Therese Brown, ACP executive director.

Liguori’s finalists cover a wide range of topics, from superhero saints to super families. Publisher Virgil Tipton said he is pleased Liguori is being recognized for books that reach readers in the midst of their real lives.

“As a Redemptorist ministry, we meet people where they are in life—whether in busy families or just socializing with friends—and we invite them to notice God’s presence. Our goal is to publish works that help readers move forward in their faith journey. This recognition tells me we’re succeeding,” he said.

“When Liguori Publications first suggested a book about the ‘holy messiness’ of family life, I saw the need for it immediately,” said Dr. Mary Beth Yount, director of programming for the 2015 World Meeting of Families and contributor to Family, the Church, and the Real World. “I got even more excited when the all-star lineup of authors was finalized.”

“The fact that this book has been selected as a finalist for the top inspirational book of the year by the Association of Catholic Publishers highlights that the experience of reading it feels like talking to your best friend, but with a depth of insight that makes it unforgettable,” said Yount.

Sarah Vabulas, a social-media expert, blogger, and author of The Catholic Drinkie’s Guide to Homebrewed Evangelism, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the Church. “When I created Catholic Drinkie, I hoped to serve the Church in a special way by reaching hearts through a common interest for many. I am humbled by the response to my book. I just know the Holy Spirit has been instrumental in guiding my words.”

Two Liguori picture books were also named finalists.

John and Marieta Monette, author and illustrator, respectively, of Francis, the Pope for Kids, are inspired by their three sons to create books teaching children about holy men and women. Their second book, about the life of Mother Teresa, will be available from Liguori in September 2016.

Barbara Yoffie, a religion education coordinator with 35 years of experience in Catholic schools, wrote Michael the Archangel: Protector of God’s People and the other books of Liguori’s Saints and Me! series after realizing there was a need for books that introduced very young children to the saints.

The Catholic Mom Lisa Hendey said the series has “the ability to help your child bond with new spiritual friends who will serve as lifetime companions.” The book features illustrations by the renowned Jeff Albrecht.

The winners of the 2016 Excellence in Publishing Awards will be announced in June.
