2010s: A Magazine’s “Century of Sustenance”
During the new century’s second decade, Liguori Publications broadened its spectrum of respected, authoritative Catholic voices by acquiring Catholic Update, a well-known newsletter from Franciscan Media. Since 1973, this easy-to-read full-color four-pager has helped millions of Catholics grow their faith in classrooms, religious-education programs, and adult faith-formation settings. Written by leading theologians, spiritual authors, and biblical experts, more than 350 editions of Catholic Update on timely topics are available in print and electronically.
2000s: Pastoral Publishing in a New Millennium
Reflecting on his time as president and publisher of Liguori Publications (1999–2006), Fr. Harry Grile, CSsR, wrote “Pastoral Publishing: How Liguorian’s Advice Changed with the Times” (Liguorian, March 2013). He remarked that the twenty-first century came in peacefully, but the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 “changed everything.” Nevertheless, Liguorian continued its mission to address readers’ anxious questions, including those about a “new normal,” as people in the US felt less safe and secure because of 9/11.
1990s: Liguori Publications Goes Global
In the 1990s, Liguori Publications demonstrated a few nimble moves, adding an international beat! The company began targeting the pastoral needs of the Hispanic and African American communities, and it broadened its mission in the international marketplace of rights and permissions.
