The year 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation led by the priest and monk Martin Luther when he posted a list of 95 objections on the church door in Wittenberg, Germany, on October 31, 1517. In commemoration of the anniversary, Catholics and Lutherans are embracing ecumenical efforts that also acknowledge fifty years of successful dialogue and achievement between Catholics and Lutherans as the two churches narrow long-held differences.

That the Catholic Church joins in this anniversary acclaim is significant, since Catholics have not always been encouraged to find value in the reformation. This effort highlights the continuing and genuine intention of the Holy See toward reconciliation with the Lutheran church.

As Pope St. John XXIII said in 1964, "The things that unite us are greater than those that divide us."
