Óscar Romero

A Life of Love and Liberation

Throughout his life, Archbishop Oscar Romero demonstrated remarkable strength of faith and determination in sharing the Good News with the politically oppressed citizens of El Salvador—eventually becoming a martyr. In March 2018, nearly forty years later, Pope Francis confirmed the miracle needed to advance Archbishop Romero's cannonization on October 14, 2018.

In this article, Dr. Daniel Cosacchi, Canisius Postdoctoral Fellow and lecturer of Religious Studies at Fairfield University, focuses on the “controversial,” yet “inspiring,” ministry of Archbishop Romero, as well as the obstacles he has encountered in his canonization process.

“The people cherished him just as we all cherish our own bishops who remain close to us, but Romero’s love was extraordinary because of the grave risks that such love entailed, risks that were not characteristic of many other dioceses throughout the world,” writes Dr. Cosacchi.
