From the first gathering of the disciples by Jesus, we were called to spread the gospel. “I will make you fishers of men” (Mark 1:17). Events in the twenty-first century have taught us that there is also a need for dialogue and mutual understanding among representatives of the great religions of the world. The New Testament encourages Christians to engage in both missionary activity (evangelization) and dialogue (mutual understanding). In this Catholic Update, author Daniel J. Daniel J. Harrington, S.J., (1940-2014) was a professor of New Testament at Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Mass. He also served as the general editor of New Testament Abstracts for many decades and as president of the Catholic Biblical Association (1985-86). He is the author of Encountering Jesus in the Scriptures (Paulist Press, 2013) and The Catholic Church in the 21st Century: Finding Hope For Its Future in the Wisdom of Its Past (Liguori Publications, 2005) and many others.
