When Jesus called the tax collector Matthew to follow Him, He knew Matthew was a sinner and an outcast among the people of Nazareth. Matthew extracted payments from the Jews and gave their money to the Roman rulers. More than just a sign of inclusion, Jesus invited Matthew in an act of mercy. He looks upon this scorned and hated man with compassion and offered him salvation. In choosing him as a disciple, Jesus forgives Matthew for his past. We are all sinners, and still, Jesus provides redemption if we agree to follow Him.
