Dorothy Day: Servant of God

Challenged by the Gospel, She Challenges Us
A Redemptorist Pastoral Publication

Dorothy Day was born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 8, 1897. She completed high school at the age of sixteen and joined the Socialist Party in 1914 when she was a college student. After writing for The Call, Dorothy met Sister Aloysius (a member of the Sisters of Mercy order) who led her to the Catholic Faith. Her conviction that there could be a better way to live, that there is enough for everyone to be fed, housed, and cared for, was affirmed as she discovered the liturgy and teachings of the Catholic Church and as she read the Gospels. From the time of her conversion, Dorothy lived her faith until the end of her life. Challenged by the Gospel, she challenges us to live the faith we profess and embrace the teachings of Jesus, even and especially, those that seem impossible.
