Damien of Molokai

Joseph de Veuster was born in Belgium and lived on a farm with his family. He wanted to become a missionary priest and took the name Damien when he entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Damien was sent to Hawaii and then to the island of Molokai to work with the lepers there. He treated them with respect and worked for 16 years before contracting the disease himself. Saint Damien of Molokai is the patron saint of Hawaii and people with leprosy.

Available separately, the companion Saints of North America Activity Book provides coloring pages and other activities related to the saints. With 96 reproducible pages, the book makes a great resource for teachers, catechists, and parents to use over and over again. Children can relive the stories and learn by participating in word searches that contain words from the stories, coloring pages that have pictures from the stories, and reflective material on the saints as role models. This is an excellent way to introduce the saints to children, helping them to understand virtue and desire to live a holy life.
