Catholic Education
“At the heart of Catholic education, there is always Jesus Christ: everything that happens in Catholic schools and universities should lead to an encounter with the living Christ.” The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), as part of a global conference to assess the state of Catholic education, identified four themes of importance that characterize and challenge the current environment of Catholic schools across the US:
1. The funding and governance of Catholic schools so that they are affordable.
2. Formation of future leaders and teachers so that they are a faith-filled laity.
3. Striving for inclusiveness through an outreach to Latinos and students who live in poverty. 4. Keeping their Catholic identity while providing an excellent education.
This article spotlights Catholic schools throughout the country on practical ways they are meeting these challenges.
