Pope Benedict XVI Submits Resignation

A papal resignation is far more surprising and rare in church history. Nevertheless, the same rules of electing apply: effective from the date of the resignation, the process of the interregnum and preparation for the conclave begins--although in the case of an announced resignation, with a greater lead-time. There will be no wake, funeral, or the novemdiales (9 days of mourning), but the conclave must begin 15-20 days after the resignation.
